Texas Ranger Weekend!

Hello All! It's been extremely busy, stressful, and full of ups and downs lately! Man, life is great and can be a bit challenging at times. School is good, but I'm still not sure if it's what I'm meant to do forever. It has been great and stressful all at the same time! I truly love my kids and my team, but I am just uncertain! Lots of prayer time ahead for me!
This weekend, my great great great grandpa, James Nichols, who was a Texas Ranger in the 1800s, was honored at Llano Cemetery on October 31, 2009. He was honored for his service by the Texas Ranger Association. It was a neat experience and so, the family packed into the car and off to Llano we went!

Here is Michael trying to read the map. Haha! Man, good thing Dad knew where he was going. Llano is where my grandpa grew up and where they had a deer lease while my dad was growing up, so Dad was really excited to go back to the old hunting ground.

Here is my grandpa, cute as ever, loaded up to go on the trip! He broke his ankle at the farm on October 29th and said that nothing was going to stop him from going to his great grandpa's memorial.

Haha! So excited to go! I really was...it was a neat experience, part of history, and it's not every day that someone from your family gets such a great and historical honor!
Grandma and myself once we arrived in Llano and "rested" in the hotel.

Mom and myself.

We ate at Cooper's and it was great! You pick/cut your meat outside and then make your way inside to get all of your sides and fixins! :) It was interesting to see all of the "welcome hunter" signs around all of the local businesses! Hunting season has officially begun!

Me and my grandpa! Shortly after this picture, after being told not to take his brake off of his wheelchair until my dad could help him, he decided that he could do it himself and took the brake off and rolled down the sidewalk and into the parking lot! Michael ran to the rescue and saved him from tipping over or crashing...whichever came first! My grandpa is stubborn and so cute! After he did that, he said, "that sure was fun!"

Great picture of Mom and Michael.

us.

Time for the ceremony and unveiling of the Texas Ranger cross and headstone. They are uncertain where my ggggrandpa's remains are. They believe that he was buried in the Nichols Cemetery in Kerrville, Texas, but the cemetery has no record of this and they believe his grave marker was washed away long ago. They ended up putting the memorial marker/headstone by his youngest son's grave, which is my grandpa's grandpa.
A picture of the program provided by the Texas Rangers.

Giving a brief history of James Wilson Nichols' life. He kept a journal everyday of his life since he was twelve years old and it became published as a book entitled "Now you Hear my Horn." We are fortunate enough to have found a copy to own and pass down for generations to come.

More history/story telling about my ggggrandpa.

Before the unveiling.

A couple of "old" Texas Rangers.

Here he is. He served with John Coffee Hays.
MeMe took this picture, and it is us with the unveiled cross, but she didn't get that in the picture.

My grandparents with the cross and headstone.

My family.

The Texas Ranger cross, the "headstone", and my gggrandpa and grandma's headstone.

All of the Texas Rangers that were there representing the different divisions of the Texas Rangers. The Mayor, newspaper, President of the Former Texas Rangers, and a representative of the different divisions were there. Awesome.

The three generations of the Nichols Men. My grandpa, dad, and brother.

Close up.

The cross has three horseshoes on the bottom, but the ground was so wet that they ended up under ground!

We made it! And it was an awesome experience.
